Ozone monitoring at Kyiv-Goloseyev station
Responsibility
The Kyiv-Goloseyev ozone monitoring Regional GAW station No. 498 (GAW ID KGV) with the Dobson ozone spectrophotometer D040 has been established by Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (KNU) in collaboration with the Main Astronomical Observatory (MAO) NAS of Ukraine. The scientific team in charge of atmospheric chemistry observations at the station: Space Physics Laboratory of KNU and Laboratory for Atmospheric Optics of MAO included 7 scientists total, who joined in the United Laboratory of Atmospheric Optics and Aerosol of KNU and MAO. PI for the station and research: Dr Gennadi Milinevsky. E-mail: [email protected] History The Dobson ozone spectrophotometer D040 has been lent by the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium to the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University (KNU). Before the installation of the instrument at the newly established ozone monitoring station in Kyiv - Kyiv-Goloseyev site - the spectrophotometer was refurbished at the Meteorological Observatory Hohenpeissenberg, with installation of new electronics, and alignment and then calibrated against the secondary European reference D074 at the SOO-Hradec Kralove. Training As a part of a training program for the experts of the KNU and MAO to better characterize the optical parameters of the Dobson instrument, spectrometric measurements of the slit functions of D040 were also measured by the invited expert of the World Dobson Calibration Centre NOAA/ESRL/GMD, Boulder, CO. The action was recommended by the SAG-Ozone and organized under the umbrella of the Global Atmosphere Watch Programme (GAW) of the WMO as the activity of the Regional Dobson Calibration Centre Europe on the capacity building. The training was focused mainly on explanation of the methodology of Dobson observations, operation and maintenance of the instrument and proper use of the operational software at the station. A special attention was paid to improvement of the practice on in-situ measurements at Kyiv and the regular lamp tests including operational correction of the calibration constants (N-Tables, Q-Tables). The procedure of processing of data with the O3Dobson software and international data exchange was included in training. Dobson spectrophotometer purpose The purpose of D040 is to be used as normal operational instrument at the Kyiv-Goloseyev Regional station. Secondary possible use of D040 in the future is to serve as the backup instrument for the Vernadsky stations instrument D123 in Antarctica. If the D040 spectrophotometer will be installed at this Antarctic station so that D123 can be returned for calibration. This will be done in cooperation with the experts of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). |
